Concrete Infrastructure Research Group (CIRG)

In May, Michele and Jess of the CIRG attended the IABSE Symposium Prague 2022: Challenges for Existing and Oncoming Structures (https://iabse.org/prague2022). The conference showcased some of the best new technology in infrastructure design and maintenance, with both academics and industry professionals coming together to discuss challenges and solutions.

Michele presented his research paper titled "Shear design in concrete beams without transverse reinforcement – A comparative study" and was chair to the session "Infrastructure Design". Jess was able to present her paper titled "An analysis of the potential for improving cement efficiency through functionally graded concrete elements with durability-driven concrete specification" through a poster, seen in the photograph below. It was a great opportunity for both to gain some valuable feedback on their work so far.

Both members were honoured to meet Professor Bazant, who was giving a keynote lecture at the conference. Professor Bazant has authored six books, has over 85,000 citations, and is the world-leading authority on size effect in the mechanics of solids.

The Concrete Infrastructure Research Group develops sustainable infrastructure, through an improved understanding of existing infrastructure assets, the use of new materials, and the creation of innovative structural solutions.
