Concrete Infrastructure Research Group (CIRG)

Hasini Weerasinghe presented a summary of her 1st year PhD work at a Structures Seminar organized by the University of Cambridge Structures Research Group on 20th November 2021. Hasini and Danielle Van Gilst delivered online presentations during the seminar.

Hasini’s research focuses on aggregate interlock action in reinforced concrete beams with low transverse shear reinforcement. Amongst the ways of idealising the critical shear crack geometry, a polynomial representation was highlighted as being promising.

After the presentation, there was an interesting discussion about the ideas presented and future directions. The determination of shear crack shapes in terms of Mohr’s circles and arching action proved to be topics with many diverse views!

The Concrete Infrastructure Research Group develops sustainable infrastructure, through an improved understanding of existing infrastructure assets, the use of new materials, and the creation of innovative structural solutions.
